Golden Globes 2020: Hollywood elites’ toe-curling reactions as Ricky Gervais rips them for ‘woke’ hypocrisy

RICKY Gervais ripped into the Hollywood elites at the Golden Globes for their “woke” hypocrisy and the stars’ toe-curling reactions say everything.

The comedian left the crowd reeling with his opening monologue, taking on Harvey Weinstein, ISIS and Jeffrey Epstein.

But the comments were a bit much for Hollywood royalty, who grimaced throughout the monologue.

Gervais said: “If you win, right, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent, and your god, and f*** off, okay? It’s already three hours long.”

He poked fun at other audience members, including Martin Scorcese, saying: “Martin Scorsese said the Marvel films remind him of theme parks. I don’t know what he’s doing hanging around theme parks – he’s not big enough to go on the rides.”

Another jibed at Epstein’s Hollywood connections: “You can binge watch the entire first season of Afterlife. That’s a show about a man who wants to kill himself after his wife dies of cancer.

“It has a second season though, so he obviously doesn’t kill himself in the end – just like Jeffrey Epstein.

“I know he’s your friend, but I don’t care.”

Another jab came for Leonardo DiCaprio’s girlfriends: “Nearly three hours long. Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere and by the end, his date was too old for him. Even Prince Andrew’s like, ‘Come on, mate – you’re nearly 50, son.’”

One of the most stinging jokes took aim at their hypocrisy: “Apple roared into the TV game with The Morning Show, a superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing. Made by a company whose products are made by sweatshops in China.

“Apple, Amazon, Disney. If ISIS started a streaming service, you’d all call your agents!”

Despite the crowd’s sour reactions, Gervais later said he found social media fans’ comments “amazing.”

“Best reaction ever and that means a lot to me,” he tweeted on Monday.

“I had a blast, but thank f**k it’s over.”

While Gervais brought the laughs, Tom Hanks made people cry with his acceptance speech.

His acceptance speech for the lifetime achievement Cecil B. deMille Award brought on both floods of tears and laughs.

Facing his wife, Rita Wilson, who was in the audience, the 63-year-old said: “A man is blessed with a family sitting down front like that – a wife who is fantastic in every way, who has taught me what love is.

“Five kids who are braver and stronger and wiser than their old man is. And, uh, a loving group of people who have put [up] with me being away months and months and months at a time.”

Hanks, who has been nominated for a Golden Globe eight times, jokingly blamed his cold for the reason he was choking up.

The beloved A-lister said: “It’s the cold that is making this happen. I swear to God, I’m not nearly this emotional at home.”

The actor has previously picked up Golden Globes for his roles in Big, Philadelphia, Forrest Gump and Castaway – but he also poked fun at some of his earlier roles.

Following the opening montage, which showcased Hank’s past performances, the actor asked the audience: “Tell the truth now. Can I just see a show of hands? How many people in this room have a clip package that includes The Love Boat? Anybody?”

Hank’s other popular movies have included Saving Private Ryan, Sleepless in Seattle, Splash, Turner & Hooch and You’ve Got Mail.

In his speech, he thanked the directors he has worked with over the decade, saying he has “never not been challenged or flummoxed or lost sleep because of the work that of the directors that I’ve worked with, every single one of them.”
